Honorlock Side-Angle Camera Setup

Applies to GT O/MSA students only.

Overview

This semester, the webcam setup for proctoring is switching to a side-angle camera. This provides more flexibility with proctoring restrictions, enabling "open-book, open-internet" exams without additional limitations.

Equipment Requirements

One of the below:

  • External webcam (with a 5' cable) - recommended
  • iPhone with MacOS computer
  • Android phone with MacOS or Windows computer

Note: iPads, Amcrest Cameras, Nexigo Cameras will not work

While we highly encourage you to purchase or borrow an external webcam, which can be had for as little as $15, we realize everyone's circumstances are different. The above options using your phone + computer should work just as well, but you will want to test it out and ensure you're comfortable with the setup. For example, you will need to plug it in, and ensure it has a stable connection.

Critical

Even if you have the right equipment, you will need to test it out using the practice exam to confirm it works. There are some nuances with the phone->computer setup that may require an extra step or two to resolve.

Proctoring Requirements

The ideal angle/view for the external webcam, on your left or right side, should capture the profile of your face, your desk or workspace, and your computer screen. This may require placing the camera on a surface that is not your desk, such as an end table. Some type of mount to provide it elevation will be useful, but putting it on top of a few books or a box should help provide the right view. There will be an outline Honorlock provides to help you ensure it's setup correctly.

Test your setup

A practice exam to test the Honorlock exam setup has been enabled. You can find it in Canvas>Modules>Practice Proctored Exam (Honorlock check)

Additional Notes

  • Honorlock will show an overlay over the camera view, to help you align it correctly. Getting that aligned may require you to move the camera a bit, so plan to test this out and find a good way you can mount the device and adjust it as needed. We were able to get by with placing it on a few books, but depending on your setup, it may require more work.
